Background of the Study

Virtual Reality (VR) technology has been widely adopted in education for its ability to provide immersive and interactive learning experiences. When combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), VR becomes an even more powerful tool, enabling adaptive learning environments that can adjust in real-time based on student interaction. AI-based VR learning systems offer an opportunity to simulate complex real-world scenarios, allowing students to explore environments and experiences that are difficult or impossible to replicate in traditional classrooms.

In Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, traditional teaching methods face challenges such as large class sizes, limited practical exposure, and engagement issues, particularly in subjects requiring hands-on learning. AI-based VR systems can potentially address these challenges by providing more engaging, personalized, and interactive learning experiences. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based VR learning systems in enhancing the learning outcomes and student engagement in the university, with a focus on practical, immersive experiences that facilitate better understanding.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, currently relies on conventional teaching methods, which often struggle to keep students engaged and provide sufficient hands-on experiences in fields such as engineering, medical sciences, and environmental studies. While VR technology has been successfully applied in other educational contexts, its use at the university level in Kashere remains limited. This research seeks to assess the potential benefits, challenges, and overall effectiveness of integrating AI-based VR learning systems into the university's curriculum, particularly in enhancing the quality of practical and experiential learning.

Objectives of the Study

1. To design and implement an AI-based Virtual Reality learning system for students at Federal University, Kashere.

2. To assess the impact of AI-based VR learning systems on student engagement and learning outcomes in practical courses.

3. To identify the challenges and opportunities of implementing AI-based VR learning systems in higher education institutions.

Research Questions

1. How does the implementation of AI-based VR learning systems impact student engagement and learning outcomes at Federal University, Kashere?

2. What are the perceptions of students and faculty regarding the use of AI-based VR in enhancing practical learning experiences?

3. What challenges are faced during the implementation and adoption of AI-based VR learning systems in the university?

Research Hypotheses

1. The AI-based VR learning system significantly improves student engagement and learning outcomes compared to traditional methods.

2. Students and faculty perceive the AI-based VR system as an effective tool for enhancing practical learning experiences.

3. The implementation of AI-based VR systems faces challenges related to technology infrastructure, system integration, and user adoption.

Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the potential of AI-based VR learning systems to improve educational outcomes, particularly in practical subjects that require immersive experiences. It will inform policymakers and university administrators on the benefits and feasibility of integrating advanced technology into university curricula.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of AI-based VR learning systems in Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State. Limitations include the availability of necessary technological infrastructure, resistance from faculty members, and the potential high cost of implementing VR systems.

Definitions of Terms

• AI-Based Virtual Reality: A learning system that combines AI and VR to create personalized, adaptive, and immersive educational experiences.

• Virtual Reality: A simulated environment that can be interacted with by a user, typically through a headset, providing an immersive experience.

• Learning Outcomes: The measurable skills, knowledge, and competencies that students acquire through an educational process.
